Hoelderlin: ‘Mnemosyne’

4 page MS book, black stick ink on Zerkall paper, tan Fabriano endpapers, black Somerset card cover. Completed in October 2004

I was listening to ‘Mnemosyne’, the recording made by Norwegian jazz saxophonist, Jan Garbarek, and the Hilliard Ensemble: ‘soothing, timeless sonic frescos reverberantly recorded in the Austrian St. Gerold monastery’. These words by the German poet/philosopher Friedrich Hoelderlin were printed in the CD booklet. I wrote this piece spontaneously with no preparation in that curiously half-conscious state inspired by the reflective quality of the music.
